Ontario Heads of Language
is an organization made up of language/communication administrators and
coordinators from all English-language colleges in the province. Heads of
Language has the following mandate:
- Provide leadership for provincial language/communications faculty and direction
for communication skill assessment and language course development and delivery
- Advocate both internally in the Ontario college community and externally with
government, employers, and other educational constituencies (e.g., high schools,
universities) for the importance of communication skills and effective
communication skill instruction
- Utilize the expertise of its members to act as a
vehicle for input to the government and other interested bodies in the language
acquisition and communication skill development area, and provide feedback as
needed
- Articulate and share descriptors and examples of language competencies
required by students entering college, anchored in employability skills, and
work together with high school partners in preparing students to meet these
requirements
- Provide a forum through the Heads of Language listserve and the
Heads of Language website for discussion of issues of communication skill
assessment and development, and for sharing of communication skill research and
information
- Advise on and participate in the development of assessment tools and
best practices for language learning and teaching
- Provide a common voice and a
link to IPCC for college language/communication practitioners across the
province, including subgroups such as ESL course providers
